This week, we are proud to share Will’s story.
Will joined Sendero in our Dallas office in 2021. Prior to that, Will studied entrepreneurship and venture management at the University of Oklahoma. His consulting experience includes data and analytics, systems implementation, and PMO in the utilities and manufacturing industries.
What led you to Sendero?
Throughout my studies at OU, I really felt like I had developed a well-rounded skillset through my entrepreneurship degree and wanted to find a place where I could have different experiences, work alongside people with diverse backgrounds across various industries, and have a chance to take initiative from day one. I had heard good things about Sendero from connections that already worked there, and after the interview process I realized it was a definite fit for me. I was very excited about the opportunity to apply my strong foundation in the “real world” and Sendero was extremely welcoming throughout the entire hiring process!
What stands out to you about Sendero?
Sendero’s people are the best of the best. A client’s relationship with Sendero is so much more than what you can fit on a statement of work. I am consistently blown away by the people I work with and their willingness to go above and beyond. I think Sendero is such an amazing place to start and grow your career because managers and supervisors do an excellent job at prioritizing client work while keeping in mind your personal career goals and the experiences you need to continue to grow.
What has been your favorite part about being a consultant?
I have enjoyed getting to work and interact with people at every level of their careers, both at Sendero and in my client experiences. I’ve been in consulting for almost four years now, and it makes work so much more enjoyable to be able to connect with my fellow Senderoans and build relationships over the years. Additionally, I have worked with some incredible clients who have taught me so much and helped me grow exponentially.
What industries have you worked in?
I’ve worked with clients in manufacturing, specifically in the mobile storage and logistics space, as well as clients in the utilities industry.
Most successful projects are the result of exceptional teamwork. How has your time at Sendero shaped the way you approach being a team member and leader?
Since I was young, I’ve always been a team-first type of guy. Being at Sendero has allowed me to apply that mindset at a higher level and enabled me to scope out the playing field to determine where and how I can have the greatest impact. At the same time, I’ve also been able to learn that I don’t have to do everything on my own. People here are accountable, and I’ve never regretted trusting a teammate. Maintaining that balance where I am trusted to independently operate and lead initiatives while still having the support to ask for help whenever necessary has been incredible.
What has your experience been with our company culture?
Company culture is what makes Sendero stand out. I’ve had the privilege of being a member of the Salt Committee for the past couple of years, which helps drive and enhance our culture. Through that committee, I’ve helped organize the last couple of Sendero golf tournaments, supported our annual employee appreciation lunch, and participated in numerous events that bring the company together. In addition, one of the highlights of my career was participating in a Community Rock—Sendero’s pro bono consulting program—for a non-profit that I had already been involved with. Being able to give back to the community was a major factor in my decision to work here. Beyond my involvement there, the best thing I can say about Sendero’s culture is that the people here truly care about you as a person, which has meant the world to me.
What are you looking forward to in the next year, both professionally and personally?
Professionally, I’m excited to continue making an impact in my current client role, especially as I take on program manager responsibilities while contributing to new projects. I’m excited about the opportunities across the firm and look forward to progressing towards the next step in my career at Sendero. Personally, I’m looking forward to traveling, especially for the many weddings of close friends over the next year. One of the highlights will be a trip to Europe in the fall, which I’m especially excited about since I’ve never been!
If you could give one piece of advice to someone interested in becoming a consultant, what would it be?
My piece of advice would be to confront challenges in your work head-on and with a positive attitude. Big projects and initiatives can be overwhelming at first, especially when you’re starting your career. But every difficult project I’ve experienced as a consultant has catapulted my growth, taught me valuable lessons, and left me in a much stronger place professionally than when I started. Look at those challenges as opportunities to take the next step and go above and beyond. If you take the time to build strong relationships with your clients and teammates and always strive to leave every place better than you found it, you will find success.
