This week, we are proud to share Tanya’s story.
Tanya joined Sendero in our Dallas office in 2024 with experience in both tax consulting and people operations. Tanya studied business and chemistry at Texas A&M University.
What led you to Sendero?
Having started my career as a tax consultant at a global firm before pivoting to people operations and talent acquisition at an AI consulting startup, I hoped to find an organization where I could bring all my past experiences, continue to grow and develop, and feel the impact of my contributions. Sendero offered me all of those. With the opportunity to work across a variety of industries and complex solutions, I knew I would be challenged each day and constantly learn and evolve. I’d be able to harness the skills and knowledge from past experiences to bring different perspectives and insights. At Sendero, I wouldn’t feel like a screw in a cog of a vast machine. I’d be a valuable team member and see the tangible results of my contributions.
What stands out to you about Sendero?
One of the things that stands out most about Sendero is the people, which may sound like a cliché answer. However, having worked in human resources, I feel especially sensitive toward the people that make up an organization. From my very first day at Sendero, I have been surrounded by people who wanted to support me and help me succeed. From onboarding to my very first project to my current project, every person at Sendero has made the time to answer my questions, share insights and advice, and support me in both my professional and personal goals and milestones. The people at Sendero foster an environment where you’re supported but also give you the runway to chart your own path to success.
What has been your favorite part about being a consultant?
My favorite part about being a consultant is the new opportunities to learn and grow. For me, a valuable aspect of consulting is building relationships and trust with the people around me–that includes other consultants at Sendero but especially with clients. In each of my projects, I’ve had the ability to work with people across organizations, from business groups to development and support teams, and at all levels, from the bottom to the very top. I’ve learned how to bring individuals together into a collaborative team. I’ve learned how to be proactive, plan ahead, and mitigate risks, but I’ve also learned how to be adaptable and pivot when something comes out of left field. I’ve learned how to be a strong team leader, but also how to be a valuable team member. I’ve learned how to harness my skills, experiences, and knowledge to make an impact for new clients, new industries, new roles.
Sendero’s tagline is “Welcome to Sendero. Welcome to How.” because we’re in the business of figuring out the how to the why for our clients, but I’d take it one step further to say Sendero has provided me with the how to my own why.
What industries have you worked in?
I have experience in the artificial intelligence, tax, and healthcare industries, and have worked with clients in oil and gas, utilities, manufacturing, construction, and retail industries.
Most successful projects are the result of exceptional teamwork. How has your time at Sendero shaped the way you approach being a team member and leader?
No matter how far along I progress in my career, starting anything new can be a bit daunting. A new career, a new company, a new client, a new project—it all can feel overwhelming and lead to experiencing imposter syndrome at times. My time at Sendero has helped me become a more empathetic and supportive team member and leader. Consulting is unique in the way the job is inherently ever-changing. We work in different industries, with different clients, and with different stakeholders within those clients and projects. We’re constantly put in positions where we have to adapt and learn quickly.
Sendero is unique in the way it supports consultants as they move through these different facets of their careers. I’ve had coworkers, of all levels, give the same level of support and understanding, whether it was my first day in a role with a new client in a new industry or my 500th day in that role with that client in that industry. Whether I’m a team member or a team leader, I ensure it’s always known I’m there for support, with the understanding that we all continue to learn and grow no matter what stage in our careers we’re in. Teams at Sendero are collaborative and communicative because we’re not competing with one another; we all work together towards our core value of shared success.
What has your experience been with our company culture?
A lot of companies throw some words on a website and call it a day when it comes to culture. One of my favorite things about Sendero is how each of us truly lives our culture every day: passion, integrity, respect, shared success, and higher reaching. I see each value every day in the way my teammates deliver their work, in the way we give back to our community, in the way we always do what’s right, in how we treat one another, and in how much everyone cares for our clients and each other.
What Sendero resources or programs have had the most impact on your career growth?
Sendero’s mentorship program and Community Rock program have been so impactful, not only on my career growth but also on my growth as a person.
Coming in as an experienced hire, I had a lot of personal and professional goals from day one. The mentorship program provided me with a mentor that I met in my second week at the company. She provided me with the space to talk about my goals, my fears, my wins, and freely ask questions. I had never worked anywhere where I was encouraged to talk about my career growth so candidly and frequently. My mentor has been integral in my development at Sendero.
As consultants, we move clients, projects, and managers, but our mentors remain our constants to help us see our careers from a holistic perspective. My mentor shared advice and provided support in not only laying out accomplishments, experiences, and skills I need to gain, but how I was going to do that. She helped me navigate my client work and internal contributions to find creative opportunities for growth. She was also the one to steer me toward the Community Rock program.
Our Community Rock program is how we give back to the community through pro-bono projects for non-profit organizations. Leading a Rock, I was able to make an impact and help an incredible non-profit while also meeting and working with other Senderoans who were passionate about giving back. As a Rock lead, I was provided with unique experiences and opportunities that differed from my client work. I learned how to be a strong leader of a team, how to mentor and develop others, and how to work with an organization new to consulting. I’ve been able to bring so much of what I’ve learned from being a part of a Rock to my client work.
I would not be where I am in my career, or have the confidence in myself as a consultant, if it weren’t for the mentorship program and Community Rock program.
What are you looking forward to in the next year, both professionally and personally?
Professionally, I’m really looking forward to continuing to learn and grow in my skill sets and knowledge base through new experiences. I hope to be able to mentor and support those around me through good stewardship, so we can all succeed together. I’m so excited to see where this year takes me in my career.
Personally, I’m beyond ecstatic to read some really great books, travel to some really great places, and celebrate some really great people in my life who have achieved some really great things.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone interested in becoming a consultant, what would it be?
Be confident in yourself and what you bring to the table. As someone who had worked in multiple industries in a multitude of roles, I came into Sendero doubting myself because I didn’t have “management consulting” experience. Sendero has taught me that great consultants come from all different backgrounds and experiences. Knowledge and skills that I gained in people operations and talent acquisition have helped inform how I plan and lead efforts through project life cycles. Experiences I had working in utilities helped me build relationships in financial services. One of the greatest aspects of being a consultant is being adaptable, and that includes adapting what you know to new things and believing in your value.
