In order to keep up with changing customer demand, aging infrastructure, and emerging technology, utility organizations are updating their legacy management systems, like Maximo, and leaning into holistic modernization. These changes are designed to optimize operations across the company so organizations can define and maintain their competitive edge.
Each year, the Maximo Utility Working Group conference brings together industry leaders, experts, and practitioners to discuss these modernization efforts and to advance the collective understanding of Enterprise Maximo within the utility sector. During the 2024 conference, Sendero Consultant Sam Leflar shared actionable insights about his work on an initiative known as the Work and Asset Management Transformation Program.
The Work and Asset Management Project
In 2023, a large electric utility company undertook a significant initiative, marking a pivotal shift in the organization’s operational landscape. This program aimed at modernizing and streamlining operations by replacing several legacy applications and consolidating distribution work management into Enterprise Maximo.
The transformation addressed crucial areas across the organization, including supply chain, measurement services, work management, asset management, reporting, and data. One notable migration was the integration of the legacy transformer system into the robust Maximo platform. Additionally, custom mobile transformer workflows were meticulously developed and deployed to coincide with the go-live, marking a substantial leap forward in operational efficiency.
Moreover, the Work and Asset Management Transformation Program addressed the pressing need to bolster the utility company’s capabilities to manage unprecedented growth pressures, particularly concerning new and replacement transformers. The program’s success was further propelled by new technological frameworks, which leveraged a mobility solution to facilitate five key asset transactions: receiving into inventory, receiving at the storeroom, building loads, conducting inventory counts, and managing shop-to-storeroom transitions.
In essence, the Work and Asset Management Transformation Program not only modernized the organization’s operational infrastructure but also positioned the company to effectively navigate the challenges of an ever-evolving energy landscape while meeting the growing demands of its customer base.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to asset management, and as companies become more complex, there’s a growing need to develop and implement innovative solutions. Mobile solutions can play a significant role in your asset management strategy, as can a resilient supply chain.
