Albert Einstein. Teddy Roosevelt. Walter Cronkite. Ron Swanson. Each historical figures with one, striking, shared characteristic: the moustache. The oft described “caterpillar on the upper lip” has withstood the test of time, and today’s moustache renaissance can largely be attributed to the growth of the men’s health movement, Movember.

History of the Movember organization

Movember began in 2003, when two friends in a Melbourne pub hatched an idea to revive the long-forgotten trend, the moustache. In just a year, this challenge between two friends grew into an organization of 480 members that provided the single largest donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. Today, Movember sponsors official campaigns in 21 countries and has raised more than $500 million to fund 1000+ men’s health programs across the world.

Movember’s efforts are concentrated on three key areas:

  • Mental Health and Suicide Prevention
  • Prostate Cancer Research
  • Testicular Cancer Research

Without action, prostate cancer rates will double over the next 15 years. Globally, testicular cancer is the most common cancer among men aged 15-39 years of age, and across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with males accounting for 75% of all suicides.

Movember at Sendero

At Sendero, the moustache is far more than a bold fashion statement – it’s a commitment to joining the fight for men’s health. During the month of November, our employees take the lead in raising funds, promoting wellness, starting a conversation around men’s health, and all the while, growing some eye-catching facial hair.

Join the movement

With men’s health in crisis, now is the time to gather your coworkers, engage your friends and family, and start a movement of your own! Here are some quick steps to kickstart your own Movember campaign:

1. Identify a Movember Champion

2. Create your Movember Team and Register at Movember.com

3. Leverage company internal and external communications to rally support

4. Engage and Educate Employees on the movement

5. Get creative! Host events, and create wellness challenges

Movember is a unique, simple way to increase team spirit and unite staff, all while raising awareness and essential funds for men’s health. At Sendero, we recognize how impactful this month can be to men’s health worldwide, but the simple fact remains – there there are millions of fathers, brothers, and sons that still need our help.
