For the second year in a row, the Sendero Wellness Committee is championing Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) during the month of October.
Because this is a cause that has impacted many Sendero employees and their families, Sendero has created a month full of activities to foster support, raise funds, and create a culture of encouragement. From our Annual Waffle War to participation in the Dallas Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Sendero employees prove their dedication to the cause by showing up in full support… and in pink attire!
Analyst Marisa Rosa sums up the month of October and Sendero’s commitment to the BCA cause:
“Last year, I helped to organize the first BCA month Sendero had ever done, and because of it, I learned of how many of my coworkers had been affected by breast cancer. It gave me a chance to not only remember my mother in the workplace but to also honor her memory by helping to raise funds to find the cure.”
Sendero hosts several BCA events throughout the month of October, including hosting a Waffle War, creating a ribbon wall, and sponsoring employees to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Analyst Amber Jacobs reflects on how these types of fundraising events have impacted her family’s story:
“In January 2019, my cousin Denise lost her 8-year battle with breast cancer. Throughout her fight, I saw the impacts to our family and her physical appearance, but her beautiful personality never faded. Breast Cancer Awareness means knowing the tools that lead to early detection and continuing to support the cause so that one day, we may find a cure for women like Denise. Fundraisers like Waffle War, where Senderoans pay to judge the waffle-making competition amongst senior leadership, was my favorite. It’s important to me to participate in these types of events not just because it continues the conversation and spreads awareness, but donating helps to reach the ultimate goal: finding a cure for breast cancer.”
For some, letting coworkers into the fight has brought solace in place of sorrow. Analyst Anna Norkett explains her thankfulness for her coworkers in time of need:
“You don’t know how challenging it will be for a family member to go through cancer until it happens to you. My mom was
diagnosed shortly after I started at Sendero, and I felt isolated and overwhelmed. When I let my coworkers know, I was blown away by how much they supported me. From sharing their own experiences and advice with me to checking on how I was doing to offering tangible help, my coworkers brought great comfort to both my mom and me. Without my coworkers, I do not think we would have made it through that scary time. I’m thankful Sendero supports BCA to provide others with the same community of support I received.”
According to Sendero Analyst Lauren Shamoon, BCA is a reminder of hope, perseverance, and gratitude for all those affected by breast cancer:
“BCA holds a special place in my heart, as my mom beat cancer when she was in her early 40’s. Early preventive treatments saved my mom’s life, and I am forever grateful for that. This month represents hope for those who are currently going through cancer treatments and are seeking a cure, perseverance for those whose battle is long and tiring, and gratitude for those loved ones who are able to win the battle. Sendero’s involvement in BCA these past two years has been extra special for me and I look forward to seeing what future impact Sendero continues to do for BCA.”
