Goal

What the client needed to achieve

One of the nation’s largest nonprofit healthcare providers had grown rapidly through mergers and acquisitions, expanding to serve more than five million patients. This growth led to overlapping initiatives, including multiple application upgrades and a large-scale electronic health record (EHR) implementation.

The organization’s Information Services Project Management Office (PMO) struggled to keep pace with its expanding portfolio, resulting in rising costs, delivery delays, and inconsistent strategic alignment. The client partnered with Sendero to assess its PMO structure, identify improvement opportunities, and build a roadmap for a more mature, future-ready PMO.

Delivery

How Sendero delivered

Sendero partnered closely with the healthcare provider to assess the maturity, strategy, and structure of the existing PMO. The team designed a customized PMO Maturity Model that evaluated processes and practices across three key dimensions — scope, approach, and maturity level — allowing leadership to visualize current capabilities and define a clear path forward.

Highlights:
  • Conducted 14 stakeholder interviews and reviewed existing PMO methodologies to create a comprehensive Current State Assessment and Opportunity Inventory
  • Facilitated collaborative stakeholder workshops to define the PMO vision and prioritize opportunities
  • Developed a three-stream implementation roadmap focused on process standardization, governance, and organizational alignment
  • Created a scalable framework and best-practice model to guide future growth and strategic planning

Practice

Transforming project management into strategic value

Sendero’s assessment and roadmap positioned the healthcare provider to evolve its PMO from a reactive support function into a strategically aligned business partner. With a clear vision, a practical roadmap, and a defined Center of Excellence, the organization now has the tools to drive efficiency, governance, and long-term success across its health information services.
