Think about the best professional mentor you’ve ever had. What made them the “best” in your eyes?
Great mentors in the workplace will help you navigate professional growth opportunities and encourage you throughout your career. Mentorship allows employees at all levels to gain new perspectives, receive guidance, and achieve long-term career goals.
At Sendero, we believe that great mentorship at an individual level is the catalyst for personal and organizational growth. Sendero provides many opportunities for employees to be involved in mentorship – both formally and informally. One of the formal methods that all employees participate in is the Career Advisory Program. Each employee is assigned a Career Advisor, known as a “CA,” who is a consistent figure for Senderoans as they move throughout their careers, even as project and client assignments change. Sendero’s Career Advisors demonstrate shared success as they guide and support their advisees, respect as they model a “listen first” mentality and show genuine interest in the relationship, and integrity as they are transparent and provide constructive feedback.
We sat down with some of our employees to hear more about how the CA Program has impacted them specifically:
How have you built a relationship with your CA?
ANNIKA: Through lots of Subway cookies… all jokes aside, we have related over sports, catching up on family, and analogies. Finding things in common with your CA can lead to genuine conversation and worthwhile time spent. They provide consistent support through client successes, growth opportunities, and career development.
JEREMY: I’ve built a solid relationship with my CA by being transparent about my experiences as a consultant and asking questions to learn from their experiences. My CAs have been intentional about building rapport with me by getting to know me on a personal level and understanding my goals, opportunities, and strengths. I also love to eat so me and my CA try to make time to connect over food.
KATIE: My CA and I have built a relationship through getting to know each other on a personal level. We bonded quickly over our love for golden retrievers and have continued getting to know each other’s interests outside of work. For me, building this trust was important so I could be comfortable openly and honestly sharing the goals, opportunities, and challenges I have in my career.
