As management consultants at Sendero, our job is to deliver to our clients and support them through their business challenges. Is this an easy job? No. Is it rewarding? To me, a million times over.
I’ve always loved to be challenged, to problem solve, and to help others. Life long learning is also a passion of mine. While you can look at consulting projects as overwhelming, I have found that if you work to reframe how you see project work and what you are delivering to the client, you not only are more successful but find additional fulfillment in your job. Framing delivery as an opportunity to support others as well as continuously learn can help make every project a great experience.
When you start out as a new consultant, some of the work can seem less glamorous than expected. If you had told me that I would love working on IT projects in the utility industry in college, I would have thought you were crazy! Fast forward to six years later at Sendero, and I now know how rewarding it is to deliver a complicated IT initiative or complete a successful project go-live. I always remind my teams and myself that if the work wasn’t hard, we wouldn’t have a job—consultants are brought in for a reason, and that reason often results in making our clients’ lives easier.
The growth opportunities we face in consulting don’t stop with our traditional clients. We also contribute to Sendero’s internal projects, which include community rocks, pro bono projects that directly impact Dallas and Houston non-profits. This is yet another way to see consulting work benefit others while also allowing our consultants to learn in more challenging roles, and take on tasks they might not have an opportunity to work on otherwise. Thanks to these internal projects, I’ve been able to grow in a safe environment, add value to organizations I care deeply about, and impact Sendero in a positive way.
By reframing each project as a learning opportunity and ability to help others, you can keep a positive mindset that will only help you be more successful every day.
