Employee Spotlight: Gustavo San Roman

Most successful projects are the result of exceptional teamwork. How has your time at Sendero shaped the way you approach being a team member and leader?

I’ve been lucky to have worked with some amazing people in my time at Sendero. In my first few projects, I had many opportunities to learn and grow from the examples of those around me. From people who have been at the company for six months to people who have been here for six years, I have always felt a great sense of support. So–as I grow–my goal is to give back; I want to support others in the same capacity.

What has your experience been with our company culture?

I’m all in for the culture here at Sendero. I wanted to get involved as quickly as possible! Shortly after joining, I remember being interested in supporting my alma mater’s recruiting efforts. Since then, I became one of UT’s Campus Recruiting Ambassadors and love going back to Austin and talking to students. Outside recruiting, I have been a part of Salt, our culture committee, and helped organize various events like our golf tournaments and our company-wide fantasy football league. Currently, I’m the lead for a Community Rock where we are partnering with my former grade school. Everyone involved in the project is passionate about what they are doing and always looks to go the extra mile.

What Sendero resources or programs have had the most impact on your career growth ?

I think that our Career Advisor (CA) program is an amazing and unique part of the Sendero experience. Having a senior manager involved in my career growth at the company is great because I know that, at the end of the day, there will always be someone in my corner ready to give advice. Apart from the opportunity to meet more people at the company, having a connection to a more tenured consultant is a huge resource.

What are you looking forward to in the next year, both professionally and personally?

I am starting a new project this year, so I’m excited about the challenge of a new role with new teammates and responsibilities. I really have an awesome team around me, so I’m in a great position to learn as much as I can! Outside of work, I’m hoping to travel this year and continue to learn Portuguese and French. I would love to see friends in New York and Miami, as well as some family in Venezuela.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone interested in becoming a consultant, what would it be?

If you are interested in consulting, the one piece of advice I would recommend is to ASK! Go on LinkedIn and find people from your university who work in consulting and ask them how they like it. If you can, ask for a quick call and you will hear plenty of different responses about the work experience. If you like what you hear, don’t be afraid to apply. Consulting can seem like a big sea to dive into, so use formal and informal interviews as an opportunity to ask even more questions about work-life balance and company culture. At the end of the day, find an environment where you feel like you want to contribute to, inside of client work and internally at the company. You’ll learn so much and you’ll meet some amazing people!
